Why your track sounds muddy — and the order to fix it in
Clarity is not a plugin. It is the result of every element having its own space in frequency, in time, and across the stereo field. Here is how to find what is stealing that space, in the order that actually works.
1. Diagnose before you touch anything
Solo nothing. Play the full mix at conversational volume and write down, in plain words, what you cannot hear. “I lose the snare in the chorus.” “The lyrics blur on the second verse.” That sentence is your brief. Engineers who skip this step end up EQ-ing things that were never the problem.
Then check the same passage at very low volume. Low-level listening flattens your ear's bass sensitivity and exposes balance issues instantly: whatever you still hear clearly is your loudest element, whether you intended that or not.
2. Frequency: stop three things from owning one octave
The 150–400 Hz band carries the weight of a record, and nearly every instrument has something there. The fix is subtractive and hierarchical: decide which single source owns that band, then narrow the others.
- Kick and bass: pick one for the sub (below ~80 Hz) and one for the punch (~80–150 Hz). High-pass the other. Sidechain only after this split.
- Guitars, keys and pads: high-pass aggressively — often as high as 200 Hz. You will miss the warmth in solo and not miss it in the mix.
- Vocal: a narrow cut around 250–350 Hz removes boxiness without thinning the voice. A shelf, not a cut, above 8 kHz adds air.
- Everything else: if two sources need the same 3 kHz presence lift, lift one and cut the other by the same amount. Contrast reads as clarity.
3. Dynamics: clarity is a time problem too
A mix can be perfectly balanced spectrally and still sound smeared, because compressors with slow attacks let transients through and then duck everything behind them. Set attack by ear on the snare: fast enough to control, slow enough to keep the stick.
Reverb and delay are the other half. Long, undamped reverb tails on a busy arrangement are the single most common cause of a mix that sounds fine in the verse and collapses in the chorus. Shorten the tail, high-pass the return above 300 Hz, and duck the return against the dry signal.
4. Stereo: width is space you are not using
Keep the kick, bass, lead vocal and snare centred. Everything else can move. Doubles, pads, percussion and background vocals placed at genuine hard-left and hard-right — not a timid 20 percent — free the centre for the elements that carry the song.
Always check mono. Wideners and heavily phase-shifted doubles frequently cancel in mono, which is what a phone speaker, a club sub and many smart speakers reproduce.
5. Verify on three systems before you call it done
Print the mix and listen on monitors, headphones and a phone speaker, in that order, and compare against one commercial reference in the same genre matched for loudness. Loudness matching matters: louder always sounds better for the first ten seconds, which is exactly how bad decisions get made.
Leave true peaks under -1 dBTP for the final master, and under -3 dBTP if a mastering engineer or service is next in the chain.
Common questions
- What does 'muddy' actually mean?
- Muddy almost always means too much correlated energy between roughly 150 Hz and 400 Hz from multiple sources at once — kick, bass, low piano, guitar body, room tone in the vocal. Individually each is fine; summed, they mask everything above them.
- Should I fix clarity with EQ or with arrangement?
- Arrangement first. If two instruments occupy the same octave and rhythm, no amount of EQ will separate them convincingly — you are cutting the parts you liked. Move one an octave, change its rhythm, or delete it, then EQ the remainder.
- How loud should my mix be before mastering?
- Aim for roughly -18 to -14 LUFS integrated with true peaks under -3 dBTP. That leaves a mastering engineer real headroom. Mixing into a limiter to hit -8 LUFS pre-master is the most common cause of a mix that cannot be improved later.
- Do I need expensive monitors to judge clarity?
- No, but you need more than one reference. A cheap pair of monitors, one pair of headphones and a phone speaker will reveal nearly every clarity problem, because a problem that survives all three is real and one that appears on only one is a room or driver artifact.
